The Privacy of Belonging

The image drives us to the private dimension of the act of belonging. Aesthetically unique, striking, and even controversial to the outside eye, the Easter processions in Spain invite us to embrace curiosity. We discover an ancient tradition that cultivates values and practices of connection with ourselves and with others, of collective recognition and acceptance of mistakes (sins) as part of human reality, and of repair as a source of growth. Thousands of nazarenos take to the streets in procession, carrying large sculptures kept in the churches, to which they express their love and devotion. They gather in brotherhoods (hermandades), which offer belonging to the community and integration regardless of Religious beliefs. In the Image, the Hermandad de los Negritos (Brotherhood of the Black people) was formed around 1393 by the Archbishop of Sevilla to integrate black people living in the city. Amongst other things, the hermandad served to protect them, provide assistance to others in need and to promote the liberation of still enslaved people.

The Responsibility to Protect

This image impacts us with the reality of the Indigenous Guardians of the Forest in the Brazilian Amazon. Profoundly connected to nature, they possess the awareness and the sense of responsibility to prioritize its protection and regeneration, essential for our survival. Protecting nature is protecting the human species. By observing them, we wonder. What is their daily life like as guardians of our survival? What can I do in my daily life to own the responsibility to protect? What is it that I believe is worth protecting?

Treasure in Our Hands

Throughout history, humans have yearned for a connection to the infinite, a reason for being, a meaning. We created belief systems, religions and expressions of who we are and why we are here, all deeply connected to the cosmos, the earth and cycles.

Today, disconnected from the roots of those initial ideas, we seek profitability, immediateness, and ease. We exist to produce. We publish, to be seen. Conversations about the meaning of life have all but ceased.

They can be found again by looking to the INfinite within each of us. Are we not the connecting point between outer and inner worlds?

There exists a perspective from which we can see that everything that we have been seeking already exists in the palm of our hands. We find a celebration of what we are. Of what we can create. Of what already exists and always has.

Light Remains

In stillness, clarity is found. We are never alone. In the immensity, in darkness, light remains. Intention is required to find it. Sometimes, it is where nobody is looking. Sometimes it seems like a step backwards. Sometimes it means looking to our past. When we find it, we realize it has always been shining on us. Connection prevails. “The others” fade. Light remains.
